Fashion Models or Lingerie Models?

Author: Richard

One of the highlights of the year as a lingerie buyer is to see the cat walk shows at the lingerie trade fairs. It's all well and good scouring the trade press and seeing editorials about developing and current trends within the industry or wandering around the stands of the different manufacturers to see not only whats on offer at each, but what do they have in common and where do they stand apart. This is where a well produced cat walk show comes into its own, particularly where it is broken down into sections that put some of the trends together, showing ranges from different manufacturers that identify the common threads within the industry for the coming season.

It has to said however, that great as this might be, it also needs models who show off the product to its full effect. Some of the manufacturers, Curvy Kate being a prime example, have taken the approach of having 'real women' as models. Most of the manufacturers when it comes to photo shoots for their trade catalogues and adverts, choose models who have curves and will do justice to the lingerie they are looking to promote. This also applies to the models who work on the stands at trade shows, with DD plus models, modelling DD+ bras and so on.

However when it comes to the Cat Walk shows, it has to be said that there is a tendency to use 'Fashion Models', who sadly in the main are lacking the necessary curves, that lingerie models really need. Now I'm not saying that they all need to be DD plus, as many of the smaller cup samples come in a B Cup, but sadly it is an all to common sight, to see obvious use of chicken fillets, gaping bra cups and briefs that look baggy, as the bum to fill them is sometimes missing.

Fashion models unfortunately still have that certain look, which clothes manufacturers may feel show off their products to best effect, but they do not represent the ordinary woman in the street and the reality is that when it comes to lingerie and swimwear, models need to a completely different profile. So to all you model agents up and down the country, when it comes to lingerie and swimwear shows, can you make sure that the models who are put forward have the necessary figures to carry lingerie to its best effect and lets move away from the size zero or is size zero and a half that we now appear to have.

How Do I Start a Fashion Modeling Career?

Author: Richard Landy

A modeling career in the fashion industry could be extremely lucrative. Not only that; it exposes you to the world of fashion in general. For that reason, when you retire from it, you could still venture into the business at a different capacity- all this without having gone to school to learn about it. Before you become a model in the fashion industry, you need to ensure that you have some things in order.

The first thing is that you have to conform to the standards that are held by the fashion industry. A female model should typically be five feet and seven inches or taller. Your weight should also be proportional to your height but you cannot be overweight. Your skin complexion should be near perfect. This is because most fashion houses abhor having to over rely on pictures that have been taken of their models. For this reason you have to take good care of your skin. You also need to ensure that your teeth are not crooked and are pearly white.

If you want to make it in the industry, you have to ooze self-confidence. Nobody wants to work with a wall flower. Models have to be confident and light up the room when they walk in. Self-confidence will also enable you to walk tall and this will do wonders for your catwalk.

Breaking into the fashion modeling industry will require that you are intelligent. This does not necessarily mean being book smart; you need to be quick witted so as not to be taken advantage of in the industry. You will also be required to have excellent organizational skills. The modeling industry is fast paced and if you are not organized, you could find yourself being late for shows or missing them altogether. This would not augur well because though it may seem that the industry is big, word of mouth spreads fast. If you are considered unreliable, people will not hire you.

Modeling involves flying to many exotic locations. You may also be required to relocate from your home town to a different city or state that has a blooming glamour industry. You will have to be very versatile and flexible to change. There are times you will find yourself living out of your suitcase because of all the travelling you will be doing. You cannot constantly moan about these inconveniences because that is what you get when you become a successful model.

You need to put practice for your walk and even your poses. Runway models are chosen because of how distinct their walk is. If you want to succeed, you will have to practice your walk everyday, until it comes to you easily. You will also have to practice different poses for the camera. This will be essential for photo shoots as cameramen prefer models with a wide range of expression. This will give your pictures a more diverse look which will be to your advantage.

Foreign Fashion Models can Use the H-1B Visa

By Minnesota Immigration Lawyer Vincent Martin
www.cundyandmartin.com

U.S. immigration law permits fashion models to get the same type of visa held by foreign professionals holding bachelor's degrees or higher, without the required education. This visa is the H-1B. In order for a U.S. employer to utilize the H-1B visa for fashion models, the modeling work must require a model of prominence. The following are the general requirements that must be met in order to petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services – USCIS for H-1B status for a fashion model.

1. You must provide documentation, certifications, affidavits, writings, reviews, or any other required evidence sufficient to establish that the beneficiary is a fashion model of distinguished merit and ability. Affidavits submitted by present or former employers or recognized experts certifying to the recognition and distinguished ability of the beneficiary shall specifically describe the beneficiary's recognition and ability in factual terms and must set forth the expertise of the affiant and the manner in which the affiant acquired such information.

2. Copies of any written contracts between the petitioner and beneficiary, or a summary of the terms of the oral agreement under which the beneficiary will be employed, if there is no written contract.

3. To establish that a position requires prominence, the petitioner must establish that the position meets one of the following criteria:

a. The services to be performed involve events or productions which have a distinguished reputation;

b. The services are to be performed for an organization or establishment that has a distinguished reputation for, or record of, employing prominent persons.

4. The model's requirements. An employer may establish that a beneficiary is a fashion model of distinguished merit and ability by the submission of two of the following forms of documentation showing that the model:

a. Has achieved national or international recognition and acclaim for outstanding achievement in his or her field as evidenced by reviews in major newspapers, trade journals, magazines, or other published material;

b. Has performed and will perform services as a fashion model for employers with a distinguished reputation;

c. Has received recognition for significant achievements from organizations, critics, fashion houses, modeling agencies, or other recognized experts in the field; or

d. Commands a high salary or other substantial remuneration for services evidenced by contracts or other reliable evidence.

Careers And Fashion Modelling

Author: fashion model

A fashion model’s job first appears to be one of a glamorous one. But, there are many requirements to becoming a successful fashion model. While watching different television channels, you would have come across models in ads or fashion channels that have svelte and appealing shapes, and that exhibiting a great deal of poise. And in all probability you might have wished that you could also become one. It is not just the fame and attention that lures an individual to become a model, but the big money that is involved in these assignments.

Modelling is a career that needs a lot of travelling to exotic locations, attending celebrity parties and earning big dollars for every assignment. Most of the people like us want to be in the limelight, rub shoulders with some of the popular faces in the fashion circuit, and indulge in the various activities there; but modelling is much more than that, contrary to many people’s imagination. If you want to take up modelling as your career, you need to possess some appealing physical attributes. You have to first rate yourself and gauge your weaknesses and strengths that can make or mar your prospects. Nobody is perfect, but any person can work on his or her flaws and can improve on his/her plus points. For instance, a model’s height has to be at least 5'8" or more than that, and the body weight should be in proportion to that.

Fashion models are known for their unusual or strange diets and exercise regimens. They need to undergo rigorous training methods to maintain the required body proportions required of a professional model. The skin should be glowing and healthy without any kind of scars or blemishes. The hair should look healthy and without any kind of damages or split ends. The model’s teeth should be in the same line and not flawed in any manner. A million dollar smile has got the potential to do half the job and fetch you the much coveted assignments. However, aside from all the excitement and fun, the modelling job demands dedication, commitment and a burning interest in all the endeavours. The work schedules can be erratic; models are expected to balance their work life schedules, giving due consideration to their personal health.

You need to get noticed by a good modelling agency in order for you to grow and flourish. The agencies are always on the look out for fresh and appealing faces. And, if you happen to be at the right place at the right time, you may land yourself a lucrative contract for some modelling assignments. Do take effort to search for them, and this can give you the real impetus as you give the associated people the required push. You should send out your impressive portfolios to as many modelling agencies as possible. It is important that you make your portfolio simple yet brilliant and effective. But it is not necessary that you spend a lot of money to make an excellent portfolio.

Having The Right Features To Become A Fashion Model

Author: fashion model

Once you attain the position you deserve or you get established in the world of fashion you are likely to receive loads of money for just having the good looks. And, there would be numerous people who will idolize you for your good looks as well as for your talent. Numerous are the numbers of young girls and boys that dream of living the life of a successful fashion model someday. But, the job or career is more challenging than they realize. Apart from the mandatory requirement of exceptional physical looks or beauty, you also need to have superior mental traits to help you survive and glitter in the world of fashion industry as well as in your competitor community.

A good amount of talent is a necessary factor for a person to become a fashion model. Beauty will only take you to a limited height in modelling. While in front of the camera simply looking into the object constitutes only one aspect of modelling. There is always much more to it than meets the eye. In a way it is kind acting in a movie. You have to transform in order to become the character or concept you are modelling for. You should have the ability and talent to project or portray an emotion through the facial expressions you bring forth along with your body language. The primary job of a fashion model is to make any type of product or concept look good and appealing to the market segment to which it is catering to. This aspect goes beyond just the clothing and the accessories. They are supposed to make anything look appealing with their presence or exhortation.

Let us face the hard fact; if these models do not project the goodwill, or they do not sell the product with their prowess or charisma, there is no point in having them in the ads. Some models also walk the ramps and runways. To carry one self in a proper and dignified manner, the right posture as well as the right gait must be practised and learned.

It is unfortunate that one’s personality and inner beauty do not have any influence when it comes to promotion in the world of fashion. A certain and unique look must always accompany a fashion model. A female model’s bust and hips have to be 34 inches ideally; and her waist has to be 24 inches. Again, they should stand tall at a minimum 5 feet 8 inches length or more to stand a chance.

Since vital statistics or measurements such as these happen to be very extreme, they have resulted in many eating disorders among the fashion models community. There is an option or segment for overweight people called plus size modelling. Plus size modelling option is for people with bigger figures and features. An average sized woman may not fall into either of the extreme categories. There are still some modelling houses and agencies that are hesitant to accept models that are underweight or overweight.

Beginning As A Fashion Model

Author: fashion model

Regardless of the fact that there are millions of people who are after modelling jobs every year, there are countless people, male as well as female, young as well as old, that want to test the waters of the glamorous profession of modelling. It could be high fashion; it could be swimsuit session; and, maybe it's commercial print. However, the thing is that not all fashion modelling agencies are looking for the same aspects and features. Different modelling agencies employ differently sized models to emphasize different looks for their advertisement campaigns. What do all this mean? Why, do you think, are there no exact norms in the modelling industry? While different fashion model agencies will have different sorts of expectation from aspiring models, the ‘model look' they are looking for may not always be the same.

Have you taken the time to venture out to see an open call at some fashion model agency? If the answer is a flat ‘no', then let us go for the quick scoop. Most fashion modelling agencies set apart a particular time every month where they permit aspiring models to drop in and be screened. Models may bring in a portfolio or merely a few of their best snapshots. As it is known, a majority of these high-end fashion agencies do not want to check out any of the glamour shots or any made-up images for that matter. These people want to see what a model truly has, without any make-up and hair up. Nevertheless, the complexion, hair, teeth, figure, and other vital statistics are all major aspects related to modeling. If you, at the moment, do not have any professionally taken pictures with you, do not worry about it. Just take a few good looking snap shots and carry them with you to the fashion model agency you want to be associated with. The World Wide Web has quite a lot to offer with regards to fashion modelling agencies nowadays. What is implied is that you can look up some of their official websites any time you choose.

Usually, the fashion model agencies would allow models to contact them via email, and there is provision for attaching a few good photos for modelling agencies to look at. By following this practice, they would be able to distinguish at the entry level itself whether they would be interested in seeing you in person. In some exceptional cases, these high-flying modelling agencies may even fly you out for a test shoot. They really want to determine if they can make some bucks off your looks and appearance. If you are very much interested in modelling, do not get stifled by the obstacles. Most of the models were in their teens when they took to this field. It is only natural that differently sized women models fall under different categories. There is another additional category called plus size modelling, and it stands for bigger sizes. An average size woman, most probably, will not conform to this category.

Sun, Waves and Fashion Models

Author: fashion model

You are on a vacation and you are enjoying the receding sea waves. Then you find that your favourite model is sitting on a beach chair next to you watching those waves. Models have started enjoying beaches in their free time. Even if some of the fashion models do not like the sands and beaches, their modelling assignments insist that they do. If your vacation happens to be on the date of one of those photography assignments or film shoots, you would be counted as one of the few lucky travellers. Just as sand can be compared to the waves, bikini can be compared to a fashion model. In the late 1970s, many prominent model turned superstars had their way through the sands of the Juhu wearing just the bikini. Many celebrities have also enjoyed the sunny days and beaches in their swimming trunks. They would take a stroll through Juhu right up to the Church there. These models were spotted by the vacationing crowd swimming in the clear sea, riding on jet speedboats, or just lazing on the beach. Beach vacationing trend continued with other fashion models as well. Many of these fashion models enjoy the swimwear or the bikini, and beach customs; and, they are comfortable in front of the crowd.

Fashion models enjoy being snapped in some of the beautiful beach spots wearing sexy swim wear. The world of modelling and fashion cannot do without beaches and bikinis. Bikinis are very much feminine in nature since they flaunt the curves in the apt way. It gives these models a sense of confidence on the ramps. But, a model is expected to have good and attractive vital statistics to wear a two piece bikini. The best beaches around the world are often visited by actors who dare to bare it all. Fashion models and film celebrities generally love to dance in the hot sands of these beaches. Often they choose five star beach resorts in order to celebrate their vacations when they are with their family members. Activities on the beaches are endless as this includes kite flying, sand castle building, sunbathing, riding horses, and the like. Top models and top celebrities alike enjoy spending time on these sand beaches. They want to have a complete makeover after those busy modelling sessions, fashion assignments and product shoots. During night time, they engage in bonfire singing and dancing.

In the recent years, most of the events, parties, songs and dance sequences feature beaches, and they find these places as the perfect destination to hang out with their friends. Sometimes, it could be a beach shoot for the purpose of modelling or filming. Fashion models soak themselves up in the sun, singing all the way to the beach. There is a promise in the air, a promise that assures one of balmy nights; new fashion models laze around spending their time and days on the beach. You will also get to see models tasting some of those varied tropical drinks made available there.

Indian Fashion in the Spotlight

Author: Shruti Thacker

When you think of the movers and shakers in the fashion world, you tend to think of Western designers or fashion houses – Christian Dior, Givenchy, Balmain and more. But while Western designers and fashions produce beautiful clothing, Indian designers are just as – if not more – spectacular. Indian fashion is gaining precedence and respect, with a number of fantastic Indian designers gaining recognition not only in their home countries, but in an international setting.

It is often assumed – erroneously – that Indian fashion must be Indian clothing. If the shows put on at various Indian fashion weeks are anything to go by, this isn't true in the slightest. There are a number of fantastic Indian fashion designers that are putting out clothing that is distinctly Indian in identity, but very much rely on or interpret Western and other cultural aesthetics.

Possibly one of the best-known designers at the moment, Manish Malhotra is feted for his fantastic takes on traditional Indian fashions – he constructs saris, lenghas and other traditionally Indian clothing in a way that is modern, fresh and very cool while still being incredibly beautiful. His latest show paired delicious, chaste whites with eye-catching, vivid reds to create outfits that were regal, beautiful and unforgettable.

Tarun Tahiliani is another Indian fashion designer on whom the spotlight has rightly been shown a number of times. His designs display a cutting-edge Indian aesthetic mixed in with a Western sensibility. His latest showing, at the Wills India Fashion Week in Delhi, balanced a very film noir feel with an oriental thematic, and managed to broach both Indian fashion and a Western styling. Of particular note was his take on the sari – a very delicate Indian traditional dress – with bold, embroidered accessories and unusual drapes. He also put out some gorgeous trousers, skirts and dresses – distinctly Western elements which were clearly made his own.

Another Indian designer whose Indian fashion sensibilities are a force to be reckoned with is Sabyasachi Mukherjee. This Indian wunderkind makes some of the most gorgeous clothes we have ever seen. Not just fashion designs, his shows are full of the kind of fun, thoughtful designs that don't take themselves too seriously. His recent show at the WIFW combined images of flamboyant Spanish mamacitas with Frida Kahlo artistry and vibrant, glittery colours. Sabyasachi is famed for his Indian clothes – gorgeous saris, beautiful suits – but, as his latest show proved, Indian fashion doesn't need to be Indian clothing.

And these three are only the tip of a massive, sartorial iceberg. The Indian fashion world is full of designers that create gorgeous, beautiful clothing that make the wearer look stunning. Moreover, there are a number of designers that push the envelope and the boundaries, and take Indian fashion further, to bigger and better places. Although a majority of people look to the Western fashion world, Indian fashion is coming into its own, both in terms of clothing, designs, wearability, trends and all the exciting things that go along with design and style in the fashion world.

mobilesA sister is very special to a brother. The eternal bond between a brother and a sister is definitely a cut above the rest. After mother, probably a sister is a woman in the life of a brother who always thinks the best for him without expecting anything in return.

However, all brothers are not blessed with having the divine presence of their sisters near them. For many, the sister reside miles away in another city or a country. Nevertheless, the urge to remain connected is always present.

A situation like this demands a trendy mobile phone to her which will bridge all distances. Listening to her resounding voice across long distance is indeed very satisfying. Moreover, these mobile phones are loaded with latest features like MMS, GPRS, Infra red, Blue tooth, Mega pixel camera, Movie player and FM Radio.

The availability of these features makes the mobile phones a bare necessity. A sister can always take beautiful snaps of herself and her family with a mobile phone which is fitted with a camera. A sister can always be made to feel very special by gifting her exclusive branded perfume like those from the house of Dior, Ralph Lauren, Calvin Klein, Burberry, Versace, White Diamond, Jennifer Glow and many more.

This is sure to bring tears of joy in a sister’s eyes and a brother can ask for nothing more!

Designer Watches

WatcesA lady is all about grace and sophistication. Every thing that she flaunts defines her personality. Watches with stone settings, delicate bracelet and ornate design accentuate her whole being.

Watches have a very practical purpose but that is not the ultimate for it. From the days the watches came into being they strongly made their presence felt as jewellery items. The trend has become stronger nowadays with women increasingly getting inclined towards parties and other social events. The watches that they sport match well with their designer cloths, there by, providing a sense of aestheticism and a strong fashion statement.

A brother always remains highly important in the life of a sister. She sees to it that her brother remains in comfort and does well in life. Rakhi provides the brother with a choice to return that with a lot of grace and appreciation. It gives him an opportunity to say-‘sister the world is a better place because you are always there’. And there is nothing like proclaiming that with designer watches! These watches from the house of Timex, Titan, Fastrack, Citizen, Sonata and Angora bring out new shades in the personality of one’s sister.

Flowers

FlowersFlowers speak more than words. They are fit for any occasion and can light up a dull day. Standing for the subtle emotions they can be the best gift to show care and love.

A bouquet of flowers in the center of a room is a source of visual pleasure. It communicates, attracts and makes one feel happy within seconds. They stand for all the positive emotions like happiness and love. The flowers come in varied shapes, colours, shades, fragrances and patterns. In all the best events of our lives flowers can be an ideal gift because they easily transmit the messages of love. They can also be apt for different decorative purposes.

On the auspicious occasion of Raksha Bandhan a bouquet of flowers is an invaluable gift. It can transmit the opulence of a brother’s feeling towards his sister better than loads of expensive offerings. A sister will be delighted to receive a wonderful arrangement of flowers as a Rakhi gift from his brother. She will really appreciate the time and thought devoted for choosing such a magnificent gift! These flowers carry the message- ‘Sister, our bond is inseparable.’

Gifts of Silver

Silver GiftsPossessing gifts of silver is something to cherish for a lifetime. Intricately designed items of silver have a lot of utility. These are crafted to perfection to catch the imagination of the recipient. The high point of the gifts of silver is their durable nature.

Gifting items of sliver on the auspicious occasion of Rakhi can enliven the day for one’s loving sister. Mewa Box, Thali, Tea Set, Madrasi Jug and a Supari Set are all invaluable gifts for her.

On the occasion of Raksh items of sliver make for exciting gift to a sister. They carry the message that apart from just a gift the brother has also kept the utility aspect in mind. He has remained as caring as ever and has presented his sister with some thing which he can put to good use in daily works of life. The items of silver can prove to be extremely handy while storing dry fruits or other commodities of daily use. They can also be used as showpieces.

A sister never demands a lot from the brother. She only wants small gestures which can make her feel that her brother is always there for her. A gift of silver can just reassure her that her brother may be distant from her in miles but is never far away from her soul.

Pearl Jewellery

Pearl JewelleryWomen adore Pearl Jewellery because it adds a distinct aura on their personality. With classic and feminine designs, pearl jewellery is considered show stoppers. Exquisite pearl jewellery can make heads role on a party or other social gatherings.

A brother can make the auspicious occasion of Rakhi an unforgettable experience for his sister by gifting her enchanting pearl jewellery. Freshwater Hyderbadi Natural Pearl Set, Pearl Earrings, Pendant Sets, Bracelets and Bangles can floor one’s sister on any day.

Show pieces having antique finish and carved from crystal illuminate the corner of the room where they are kept.

The occasion of Rakhi calls for gifting the sister with something which can remind her of her sweet brother all the time. She is a rare creation of god and any thoughts about presenting her with gifts have to be innovative. A brother can always pamper his sister with artistically crafted show piece items which are innovative and appealing!

Designer Mobile Bags

Designer Mobile BagsMobile bags are of great utility. They help in protecting the mobile sets from sweat of hand and dust on the road. The mobile bags for the ladies are magnificently decorated. They appear nowadays as style statement of the modern lady.

A mobile bag with captivating design is a thrilling gift for one’s sister. The hall mark of all the bags is their stress on design and use of materials like Zardosi, Beads and Fabric which make them exclusive fancy items.

A mobile bag for a sister is not an extravagant but a very significant personalized gift. It communicates that a brother never misses the minutest of the needs of his sister. Every time a sister unfolds her mobile phone from the bag she will be reminded of her caring brother!

Gift Vouchers

Gift VouchersGift Vouchers can be the perfect gift in a situation where one doesn’t know about the preferences of the person for whom the gift is being sent. The voucher provides the recipients with an option to buy products of their choice. They can go for their favourite store, food joint, fashion boutique or a beauty salon.

Rakhi can be made a treasured day on the life of one’s sister by gifting her attractive vouchers from some of the leading brands in India like Adidas, Titan, Shopper Stop, Wills Life Style, Kaya, Gili Jewellery, Big Bazzar, Pantaloons, Café Coffee Day and Reebok. These vouchers will provide her with a choice to go for fashion accessories, attractive jewellery sets, pampering skin care, memorable coffee experience and trendy shoes.

An elder sister acts like a protective umbrella to the brother from the day he is born. She takes it upon herself to ensure that her brother gets all the attention and care that he needs.

In her absence life never remains the same. It is true that a mother and later a wife have a great role to play in the life of a man, but the role of the sister is very significant and very different. She fills in the empty space which can never be filled in by the other two leading ladies in his life. What does a brother do to ornament the life of his sister? What does he do to make her feel that she is always remembered? He can do a lot! He can ensure a memorable dinning or shopping experience for his sister by presenting her with gift vouchers!

Sending rakhi to India is an experience which can not be compared with any thing else. One can send online rakhi in india and other gifts which are straight from the heart. As mentioned above Rakhi within India is all about happiness and gifting. Sisters send rakhi to India and express their love for their brothers. The brothers in turn, send a number of gifts to their sisters and express heartfelt emotions for them. Each and every gift is laced with loads of love.

Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week

Author: stylekandy

The much awaited Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week scheduled for 24- 28th Oct at Pragati Maiden has taken its first step towards making it a extravagant affair by organizing its female model auditions on Oct 5th in the capital. With each passing season, the Indian fashion runway is witnessing an increased number of Firang models and this season will be no different, at least this is what can be predicted from the scores of foreign models we saw at the audition. Theses gorgeous faces from west were not only confident but also gave the best poses to shutterbugs.

Judging all the contestants were, reputed names of the fashion industry like designer Anjana Bhargava, Namrata Joshipura and Rahul Khanna Fashion Choreographers - Aparna Bahl and Senior Model – Laxmi Rana. The esteemed jury members short-listed 13 future muses out of 48 for several attributes, such as their confidence, poise, sense of carriage and perfect attitude. Promoting and encouraging new talent is one of the key objectives of the FDCI. Models are important stakeholders of the Indian fashion industry and therefore the model auditions are an essential medium for selecting exceptional talent who would walk the ramp at the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week for the first time. The jury was looking for fresh faces to launch on the runway of WIFW as part of their commitment to provide a platform for new talent.

When asked what she felt about the quality of the new recruits and what they could adhere to as a winning formula, Namrata Joshipura answered What we have seen in terms of models this time is immensely better than the last two season. Mostly all the models have done some modeling assignments so it not at all difficult to judge them. But yes, when you have a pool of models then you have to select within a similar range in terms of height, face, attitude, and walk.

Anjana Bhargava agreed with Namrata she added I have taken into consideration that the models height and body had to be closest to perfect, and she had to have a nice walk. When we look for ramp, the body language has to be perfect and in sync with the clothes, it should exude that persona on the ramp so all these factors have been kept in mind while selecting the models.

One of the contestants who was seen all excited to face the judges shared I always wanted to be a part of this glamorous industry and what would be a better opportunity then walking on WIFW. I am here to give the perfect shot and rest depends on judges, how they like it. Atul Chand, Divisional Chief Executive, ITC's Lifestyle Retailing Business Divison summarized by saying The Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week is a great platform to recognize and nurture emerging talent. It gives us great pleasure to see the enthusiastic response to the model auditions with fresh talent drawn from across the country. I am sure the new faces discovered during the auditions will go places.

Indian Fashion Industry

In the 50's, 60's and 70's, the Indian fashion scenario wasn't exactly colorless. It was exciting, stylish and very graceful. There were no designers, models, star or fashion design labels that the country could show off. The value of a garment was judged by its style and fabric and not by who made it.

It was regarded as ever so chic and fashionable to approach any unfamiliar tailor, who could make a garment for a few rupees, providing the perfect fit, finish and style. The high society lady, who wore it, was proud for getting a good bargain and for giving her name to the end result.

In 60's, tight 'kurtas', 'churidars' and high coiffures were a trend among ladies. It was an era full of naughtiness and celebration in arts and music and cinema, manifested by liberation from restriction and acceptance of new types of materials such as plastic film and coated polyester fabric.

The 70's witnessed an increase in the export of traditional materials outside the country as well as within. Hence, international fashion arrived in India much before the MTV culture with the bold colors, flower prints and bell-bottoms. Synthetics turned trendy and the disco culture affected the fashion scenario.

It was in the early 80's when the first fashion store 'Ravissant' opened in Mumbai. At that time garments were retailed for a four-figure price tag. The 80's was the era of self consciousness and American designers like Calvin Klein became popular. In India too, silhouettes became more masculine and the 'salwar kameez' was designed with shoulder pads.

With the evolution of designer stores in Mumbai, the elegant fashion design culture was a trend among Indians along with their heavy price tags. No doubt that a garment with a heavy price tag was at the bottom stage of fashion. But clients immediately transformed into the high fashion fold where they were convinced that that the word "elegant fashion design culture" means, it had to have a higher price tag.

Garments were sold at unbelievable prices only because the designers had decided to get themselves noticed by making showy outfits and getting associated with the right shows, celebrities and events.

Later, fashion shows shifted to competitive events each attempting to out-do the other in theme, guest list and media coverage. For any newcomer, the fashion business was the number one professional art that time.

In the 90's, the last decade of the millennium, a move towards the drastic pairing down returned with ethnic wears (Today, ethnic wear market in India is accounted to Rs. 9000 crore). This led to the decline and the recession, the push to sell at any cost and keep staying in the limelight. With heavy cut throat competition and sound awareness of the client, the inevitable occurred. The price tags, which had once reached at a peak, began their downside journey.

At those times the downturn was not only being experienced in the price tags of the garments, but also in the business of fashion shows. More models, choreographers, make-up men, hairstylists and designers streamed down into their business.

The fun and party time in the Indian fashion scenario had not ended with this, but continued. It was a point, where it reached at a certain steady level and from there, in the beginning of the 21st centaury, with new designers and models and some sensible designing; the fashion hype accelerated its speed.

Indian fashion industry spreads its wings globally

For the global fashion industry, India is a very big exporter of fabrics and accessories. All over the world, Indian ethnic designs and materials are considered as a significant facet for the fashion houses and garment manufacturers. In fabrics, while sourcing for fashion wear, India also plays a vital role as one of the biggest players in the international fashion arena.

India's strengths not only depend on its tradition, but also on its raw materials. World over, India is the third largest producer of cotton, the second largest producer of silk and the fifth largest producer of man-made fibres.

In the international market, the Indian garment and fabric industries have many fundamental aspects that are compliant, in terms of cost effectiveness to produce, raw material, quick adjustment for selling, and a wide ranges of preference in the designs in the garments like with sequin, beadwork, aari or chikkon embroidery etc, as well as cheaper skilled work force. India provides these fashion garments to the international fashion houses at competitive prices with shorter lead time and an effective monopoly in designs which covers elaborated hand embroidery - accepted world over.

India has always been considered as a default source in the embroidered garment segment, but the changes of rupee against dollar has further decreased the prices, thereby attracting buyers. So the international fashion houses walk away with customized stuff, and in the end crafted works are sold at very cheap rates.

As far as the market of fabrics is concerned, the ranges available in India can attract as well as confuse the buyer. A basic judgmental expectation in the choosing of fabrics is the present trend in the international market. Much of the production tasks take place in parts of the small town of Chapa in the Eastern state of Bihar, a name one would have never even heard of. Here fabric making is a family industry, the ranges and quality of raw silks churned out here belie the crude production methods and equipment used- tussars, matka silks, phaswas, you name it and they can design it.

Surat in Gujarat, is the supplier of an amazing set of jacquards, moss crepes and georgette sheers - all fabrics utilized to make dazzling silhouettes demanded world over. Another Indian fabric design that has been specially designed for the fashion history is the 'Madras check' originally utilized for the universal 'Lungi' a simple lower body wrap worn in Southern India, this product has now traversed its way on to bandannas, blouses, home furnishings and almost any thing one can think of.

Recently many designers have started using traditional Indian fabrics, designs and cuts to enhance their fashion collections. Ethnic Indian designs with batik cravat, tie-and-dye or Vegetable block print is 'in' not just in India but all across the world.

In India, folk embroidery is always associated with women. It is a way of their self expression, and they make designs that depict their native culture, their religion and their desires. Women embroider clothes for their personal use, and the people linked with the pastoral profession prepare embroidered animal decorations, decorative covers for horns and foreheads and the Rabaris of Kutch in Gujarat do some of the finest embroidery.

Embroidered pieces are made during the festivals and marriages, which are appliqué work called 'Dharaniya'. One of the significant styles of Saurashtra is 'Heer' embroidery, which has bold geometric designs, woven on silks. The Mutwa women of the Banni area of Kutch have a fascinating embroidery where they make fine embroidery works with designed motifs and mirrors in the size of pinheads, the Gracia jats use geometric designs on the yoke of long dresses. Moreover, the finest of quilts with appliqué work are also made in Kutch.

Garments embellishment with bead work is another area where it in demand in the international market. Beads are used to prepare garlands and other accessory items like belts and bags and these patterns now available for haute couture evening wear too.

According to a survey, in recent times Indian women have given up their traditional sari for western wears like t-shirts and shorts, as they feel more comfortable in skirts and trousers instead of saris and salwar kameez. It\'s been noted that women spend just $165 million on trousers and skirts against 1.74 billion dollars spent by men on trousers. With more women coming out to work, the (combined) branded trouser and skirts market has been increasing at a whopping 27 per cent in sales terms. Women feel that Western clothing is more suitable, particularly when working or using public transportation. Many corporate offices are also in favor of their employees wearing Western wear.

In India, Western inspiration is increasing due to the influence of TV and films. Besides, shopping malls selling branded clothes have also mushroomed in India and are fascinating the youngsters. Recently, designer wear is being promoted through store chains such as Shopper\'s Stop, Pantaloons, Westside, etc. Companies such as Raymond and TCNS have also set up their exclusive stores for designer wear such as Be: and W.

The market of India fashion industry

Recently, a report stated that the Indian fashion industry can increase from its net worth of Rs 200 crore to Rs 1,000 crore in the next five to ten years. Currently, the worldwide designer wear market is amounted at $35 billion, with a 9 per cent growth rate, with the Indian fashion industry creating hardly 0.1 per cent of the international industry\'s net worth.

According to approximations, the total apparel market in India is calculated to be about Rs 20,000 crore. The branded apparel market\'s size is nearly one fourth of this or Rs 5,000 crore. Designer wear, in turn, covers nearly about 0.2 per cent of the branded apparel market.

At present, the largest sales turnover within the designer wear segment is about Rs25 crore, with other well-known names having less turnovers of Rs10-15 crore. In view of the prospects of the Indian fashion industry for growth, the figures are not very hopeful.

The figure of fashion industry

o The organized market for designer apparel is about Rs 250 crore

o Designer wear calculates to less than 1 per cent of the apparel market

o The global market for designer wear is 5 per cent of total apparel market

o The global market for designer wear industry is largely dependent on the small-scale sector

o Consumers for designer wear have a yearly household income of Rs 10 lakh-plus. There are 3 lakh such households developing at 40-45 per cent

o Designer wear industry is projected to increase to Rs 1,000 crore by 2015.

o More than 81 per cent of the population below 45 years of the age is fashion conscious.

Many fashion designers and management experts foresee an average growth of about 10-12 per cent for the Indian fashion industry in the coming years. Though, the growth rate could be more than 15 per cent, if infrastructural and other logistical bottlenecks and drawbacks are over come.

India needs more effort to overcome

However, despite the benefits available in India there are also some disadvantages. India is not a remarkable player in the global market with reference to brands because of its inability to add value to products. This is observed by the fact that nearly 50 per cent of its exports are apparel and made-ups where value addition is essential. Likewise, 75 per cent of domestic apparel market is commoditized and unbranded and very few Indian brands do survive in the foreign markets. Evidently, the Indian market has not made a strong stand and hence it is difficult to make Indian brands that can compete with global brands in India.

Another reason for the fashion industry's inadequate growth is the limited experience of the designers and the platform they are offered. The insignificance stalks from the reality that most of the young talent is hired by the bigger names to work in their studios, thus imprinting their work with the label of the big designers. Though performing individual presentation is not an alternative choice for most of the young talent, because of the limitation of finance, a beginner designer's name fails to come to the forefront.

Another thing, with regards to the ramp, is what the designers offer is barely appropriate to be worn ordinarily. You'll see there's dissimilarity between what is there on the ramp and what the Page Three crowd wears. Some believe at present the fashion is in, but the tendency hasn't changed much as it is the old ones coming back. We have had short kurtas, long kurtas, flowing skirts, etc. coming back into fashion with only a new variety of designs.

Many management consultants and professionals believe that the Indian fashion industry will be boosted if the new comers are paid proper attention. What they require is more support so that their work gets due recognition. According to the consultants and professionals there should be a panel of people who choose designers for showcasing according to their work and not their name or who they've worked for earlier, and hence selection would be purely based on quality. Besides this, the panel of judges should comprise of people from the fashion schools rather than designers.

It has been observed that the media-hype around the big designers and blatant commercialism has hindered business in the Indian fashion industry. No clear cut picture is provided about the feasibility of the products. Basically it is only the famous names that are being talked of. What they offer is not quite daily-wear. The entire focal point of the industry is on commercialism. The discussion is only regarding how much is sold and for what price and nothing about the designs or styles.

Efforts to develop global fashion brands

It needs innovative designers, a seamless supply chain, control over retail and distribution and concentration of quality while dealing with some image. While a few have accomplished something in the west covering Tommy Hilfiger, Gucci, Zara, Armani, Versace, Ralph Lauren, etc, India has not been capable to track on.

A serious reason for India not being successful has been its isolation in the fashion system. Each stakeholder including designers, exporters, textile players and retail chains need to come together along with the government to make sure that the position of Indian fashion is strong in the coming years.

There are various agencies and industry associations that can support in brand-building practice. Many of these agencies require attractive resources and making a global image of Indian fashion rather than independently trying to promote particular brands or textile segments.

Efforts to create strong global image

Large textiles players require more and more to target on the market facing activities while developing an association with small medium enterprise (SME) clusters. Such kind of networks would be a benefit to that which can focus on demand making and branding as well as for clusters that can focus on quality production.

Efforts to create value networks

After the entry of large retail chains like Wal-Mart, Gap etc in India, Small scale manufacturers in India will find it very difficult to satisfy the demands of these international buyers if they continue to promote their products individually. Therefore, it is very important that value networks are created between large textile and apparel companies in India and small scale manufacturers, so that the marketing muscle of the leading players can be utilized for receiving large orders while the bigger players then assign the orders to the small-medium enterprises according to their past record of quality and service. For this to be put into practice, it will be vital to well-organize the information on small-medium enterprise clusters in a perfect manner so that supplier selection decisions are made according to the information in the long run, only the more efficient small-medium enterprise players survive and develop.
Efforts to concentrate on designers and designs

Designers have a fundamental role to play in the future of Indian fashion scenario. There should hence be an effective process for preparing these designers. This can be done by sponsoring exchange programs with international schools, increasing participations in the fashion capitals of the world, motivating and offering business incubation to new designers and rewarding efforts through proper design awards.

Even in India, well-known designers are incapable to tap finances from well-organized resources, since a vital part of their assets are brands and design talent which are not measured in terms of money and hence it becomes difficult to judge the value. This has severely inhibited their development and capability to raise retail existence across the country and abroad. Likewise, there is no systematic approach of existence in the fashion capitals of the world like Paris, Milan and New York.

Due to this, designers have to depend on their personal contacts and relationships for organizing fashion shows and making retail alliances. The French government as well as the British government helps designers of their particular countries appreciably in these areas as they understand that value creation through design is the only way to carry on in the competitive landscape of the global fashion industry. The Indian government and related agencies should also accept this aspect of textile, apparel and fashion industry sincerely if they need to see India on the global fashion map.

Work in collaboration: designers-corporate efforts

Designers and many organizations can work globally through various models and with many working relationships. The Indian fashion industry has many views but only one such model, wherein a designer creates a retail venture with his/her own brand through organized retail chains. There are many other models according to brand ownership and division of operational activities.

Globally, many models of collaboration between designers and corporates are available. For example Ralph Lauren has made an agreement with Jones Apparel for producing and retailing various Polo brands. Likewise, Armani had an agreement with Zegna for production, even while it was competing with them in the marketplace. There are many cases of designer brands being co-owned by the designers and corporates, Gucci-Alexander McQueen and Gucci-Stella McCartney being some of them.

In the end, many designer businesses have been obtained by corporates where designers play a major role in the design elements of the business, but the brand and the organization is owned completely by the corporate.

The current possession of Calvin Klein by Philips Van Heusen and earlier holdings of Hugo Boss and Valentino by Marzotto are some related examples in this segment. These examples strongly point out that not only designers find such relationships important for development, but also corporates find these attractive for rising their profitability and growth. Likewise deals in India could go a long way in developing the brand values of corporates and designers.

Developing clusters

Making common infrastructure for functioning such as design and sampling, affluent treatment, product testing, etc can help in increasing the capability of the clusters since noteworthy investments could be made by the cluster itself rather than any single player.

Well-managed databases can help in decreasing search costs and through data mining, rating of players can be done so as to make the procurement process easier for buyers. Cooperative marketing programs at different clusters can also support players to grow up in the value chain by mixing their strengths within the cluster.

Cluster based battle in the fashion industry is characterized by the Italian industry. The National Chamber for Italian Fashion for example, supports the development of the fashion clusters at Milan and Florence in a well organized manner. Indian industry can learn a lot from Italy because India has a similar cluster based scattered production base, but has been incapable to link it with design and branding capability.

If the above activities are successfully considered, India could have an extraordinary development in the fashion industry, which could increase from a negligible size to Rs 8,000 crore in the coming decade.

Conclusion

In the 50s, 60s and 70s, the Indian fashion scenario was colorful and stylish, in the end of 20th century it was quite subdued and with the beginning of the 21st century it has geared up and is still experiencing the growth with many spectrums of colours. Though this industry is growing at a very good pace, besides achieving a negligible share in the global market, still it needs to make severe efforts to stand amongst international fashion market in various aspects.
